Eiffel," to Editor of Le Figaro Gaston Calmette, in French, thanking for advice and for placing an announcement in Le Figaro, expecting it to mitigate the absurd and unpleasant rumors, and asking that he convey regards to [Le Figaro Director Fernand] de Rodays. 1 page, square 12mo, pale blue paper, telegram form; loss to small area at upper edge touching date, folds. In 1887, when construction of Eiffel's tower began, artists and architects in France and beyond rose up in protest, claiming that the tower would be an eyesore and threaten the aesthetic integrity of Paris. Residents near the building site tried to gather support for a lawsuit against France, fearing that the tower--which was to become the tallest artificial structure in the world at the time--would collapse upon them. The objections disappeared after the majestic tower was built, remaining one of the most visited sites in France since its completion.
